Saratli Underground City: A Hidden Subterranean World

The day begins at Saratli Underground City, one of the lesser-visited underground settlements of Cappadocia and one of the most atmospheric. Like Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, Saratli was carved by early Christian communities seeking refuge from invasion and persecution, its network of tunnels, living quarters, ventilation shafts and storage chambers descending several levels below the surface. Unlike its more famous counterparts, Saratli receives a fraction of the visitors, offering an experience of Cappadocia's subterranean world that is both more intimate and more evocative. Salt Lake: Geology, Photography and Flamingos

From Saratli the route continues west to Salt Lake. The salt here is formed through a remarkable natural process: meteorological water seeps underground, dissolves ancient buried salt domes and is carried to the surface along tectonic fault lines. The streams that feed the lake - Pecenek, Melendiz, Insuyu, Karasu and Kirkdelik - slow to a trickle or dry completely in summer, allowing evaporation to concentrate the brine to extraordinary levels. By late summer, salinity reaches 329 parts per thousand - nearly ten times that of seawater - and a layer of white salt crystals ten to thirty centimetres deep covers most of the lake floor, renewed each year as the water retreats.

The lake is also a significant wildlife habitat. Flamingos breed here in their thousands - Salt Lake is in fact the most important flamingo nesting site in Turkey, with colonies of five to six thousand nests each in the lake's central reaches. Avocets, wild geese, wild ducks, cranes and numerous other species complete the ecosystem. The dark mineral-rich clay visible beneath the white salt at the water's edge is not pollution but a naturally occurring deposit that locals have long used for foot health: standing in it briefly is said to prevent foot problems for a year.

For photographers, the afternoon is the optimal time to visit: the harsh midday light softens, the reflections on the still shallow water become mirror-perfect and the sunset turns the white salt plains into shades of gold, pink and crimson. If you walk a short distance from the busy bathing area to where the water is undisturbed, the reflection photographs possible here are among the finest in Anatolia. Note: bring slippers for walking on the salt crust (which can cut bare feet), sunglasses against the reflected glare, sunscreen and a spare set of clothes as the salty water splashes.

Silk Road Caravanserai: A Rest Stop Seven Centuries Old

The day concludes at one of the historic caravanserais that once served merchants travelling the Silk Road across the Anatolian plateau. These stone-built waystation complexes - built by Seljuk and later Ottoman rulers to shelter travellers, their animals and their goods - are among the finest examples of medieval Turkish architecture and engineering.
