Overview

If your time in Cappadocia is limited and you cannot decide between the Red Tour and the Green Tour, the Highlights Tour is the clearest answer to that dilemma. This itinerary brings together the most striking stops from both routes into a single day: the fairy chimneys and valleys of the northern route combined with the underground city and workshops of the southern route, all in one carefully paced programme.

Your day begins at 09:30 with a hotel pickup. The first stop is Pasabag, where you walk among Cappadocia's world-famous mushroom-capped fairy chimneys and examine the living quarters that monks carved directly into the rock. From there you move to Zelve Open Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site spread across three valleys. Here you explore Byzantine-era rock churches, monastery complexes and abandoned settlement areas that reveal centuries of life carved into stone.

At Devrent Valley you see rock formations shaped by millions of years of erosion into animal and human figures, before continuing to Avanos. At a traditional pottery workshop on the banks of the Kizilirmak River, you watch a craft dating back to the Hittite period and, if you like, try the wheel yourself. Lunch is an open buffet of regional Cappadocian cuisine, served in Avanos.

The afternoon takes you through Love Valley's dramatic natural formations and up to Uchisar Castle, Cappadocia's highest natural point. At Pigeon Valley you see hundreds of dovecotes carved into the cliff faces and take in the panoramic view, before visiting an onyx stone workshop where local artisans shape volcanic stone into jewellery and decorative pieces. One of the day's most powerful stops follows: Kaymakli Underground City. Walking through the multi-level tunnels, living quarters and churches of this ancient settlement, you understand once more that this region is about far more than what you see on the surface.

On the return journey you stop at a traditional Turkish products tasting point to sample baklava, Turkish delight, Turkish coffee and spices. You arrive back at your hotel around 18:00, having experienced both the surface and the depths of Cappadocia in a single day.
