Cappadocia Red Tour
Overview
If this is your first time in Cappadocia and you are not sure where to begin, the Red Tour is exactly the right starting point. This full-day itinerary brings together the most striking valleys, the oldest craft traditions and the most photographed natural formations along the region's northern route, all in a single day.
Your day starts between 09:00 and 09:45 with a pickup from your hotel. The first stop is Devrent Valley, known for its rock formations shaped by millions of years of erosion into figures resembling animals and human silhouettes. Also called Imagination Valley, this is a short walk with commentary from your guide on the geological story behind each formation. From there you move to Zelve Open Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site spread across three valleys. Here you explore Byzantine-era rock churches, monastery complexes and abandoned settlement areas that reveal how entire communities once lived inside the stone.
At Pasabag you stand face to face with Cappadocia's world-famous multi-headed fairy chimneys, and examine the living quarters that monks carved directly into these towering rocks. In Avanos, on the banks of the Kizilirmak River, you visit a traditional pottery workshop where a craft dating back to the Hittite period is still very much alive. You watch a master potter shape clay on the wheel, and if you like, you can try it yourself. The workshop store offers handmade Hittite pitchers, wine goblets and decorative pieces. Lunch is an open buffet of regional Cappadocian cuisine, served in Avanos.
The afternoon takes you to a carpet workshop in Avanos, where you follow the production journey from silkworm cocoon to finished carpet, woven by hand by women artisans. At Love Valley you pause for photographs among the dramatic rock formations, and then you reach the final stop of the day: Uchisar Castle. From the base of Cappadocia's highest natural point, you take in a panoramic view of the entire region while your guide shares the castle's history. You return to your hotel around 17:00.
